02 Dates and location
When and where is AAFP FMX 2027?
FMX 2027 opens Monday, September 20, and closes Friday, September 24, 2027, at the San Diego Convention Center, 111 W. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101. AAFP suggests arriving on Sunday, September 19, if you want the early sessions.
That is a month earlier than last year. FMX 2026 ran October 20 to 24, 2026, at the Music City Center in Nashville, which is the edition most people mean when they search for the FMX conference 2026 or FMX Nashville 2026.
AAFP has already named the next three host cities. Book vacation time early if your group plans travel a year out.

03 FMX CME credit
How many CME credits does FMX offer?
AAFP markets FMX as "40+ hours of continuing education credits." The binding number is the credit statement, and AAFP publishes it per edition. The 2027 statement is not out yet, so plan with the 2026 figures below and check the education page in spring.
For 2026 the credit came in three pieces. The 36 live credits cover the sessions you sit in. The 9 enduring-material credits and the Translation to Practice® exercises (2 Prescribed credits each, per AAFP) are extra work you finish on your own.
A family physician who attends Tuesday afternoon through Friday and goes to every CME block will not hit 36. The statement is a ceiling; you claim only the hours you actually attended.
| Credit type | Amount AAFP states | Who issues it |
|---|---|---|
| Live AAFP Prescribed credit | 36 | AAFP Credit System; term of approval 9/20/2026 to 11/7/2026 |
| Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credit | 9 | AAFP Credit System |
| Translation to Practice® | 2 Prescribed credits per exercise | AAFP Credit System |
| AMA PRA Category 1 credits™ | Maximum of 36 | Designated by AAFP as an "Other activity" |
| AOA Category 2 | Equivalent, no number given | AOA recognizes AAFP-approved CME as Category 2 |
04 Prescribed vs Category 1
AAFP Prescribed credit vs AMA PRA Category 1: which one do you have?
Both. FMX carries AAFP Prescribed credit from the AAFP Credit System and a separate AMA PRA Category 1 designation, because AAFP is itself an accredited provider. Most state medical boards ask for AMA PRA Category 1; our state-by-state physician CME table shows the rule for your license.
The two systems also recognize each other. AAFP's approved wording is: "AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award." The reverse is weaker. AAFP accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ only as AAFP Elective credit, so a non-AAFP Category 1 course does not count toward your 75 Prescribed credits.
Two practical points follow. When you apply for the AMA PRA, AAFP says to list Prescribed credit as Prescribed, not as Category 1. And AAFP members need 150 approved credits per three-year reelection cycle, 75 of them Prescribed, so an FMX week can cover close to half of the Prescribed share.
The equivalency does not replace ACCME accreditation. If a state board audits you, keep the FMX certificate or transcript that names the AMA PRA Category 1 designation, not only the AAFP Prescribed line.
05 NPs, PAs and care teams
Can NPs, PAs and other care team members use FMX credit?
AAFP sells FMX registration to nonmember "care team members" as well as physicians. Its equivalency page lists the bodies that accept AAFP Prescribed credit: NCCPA, ANCC, AANPCB, AAMA, ABFM, ABEM, ABPM, ABU and ABOG. AAFP tells participants to contact each organization about how to report it.
A PA renewing with NCCPA would log FMX hours as Category 1 CME there. A state licensing board is a separate question, so check the PA CME rules or NP CE rules for your state before you count on it.
06 How to claim credit
How to claim CME credit after FMX
- Download the AAFP Events app before you travel. AAFP builds the FMX schedule, maps and CME credit reporting into it.
- Pick up your badge with a government-issued photo ID. At FMX 2026 badge pickup was at the convention center registration desk from the evening before the opening day.
- Save the sessions you attend to your personal agenda as you go. It makes the hour count easy at the end of each day.
- After the meeting, report your credits in the app (AAFP also offers the FMX website) and complete the post-event survey there.
- Check your AAFP CME transcript. Members can view, print or email transcripts of all CME reported since 2002 and use "Print Letter" next to an activity for a letter of participation.
- Send the record wherever else it is needed. AAFP sends your CME record to a third party such as ABFM only with your written authorization; NPs and PAs report to their own certifier.
The FMX 2026 live credit has a term of approval that ends November 7, 2026. AAFP's FMX pages do not state a separate claim deadline, so report right after the meeting instead of at the end of your cycle.
07 Registration and cost
FMX registration and cost: what to know before you pay
AAFP sets five rate groups for FMX 2027: members, new physician members (years 1 to 3), resident and student members, life or inactive members, and nonmembers. Each has an early-bird price through May 31, 2027 and an advanced price from June 1 to July 26, 2027. Onsite registration costs more. The current amounts sit in the fee table on our FMX 2027 event page.
The member rate depends on your status on the meeting's start date. If your membership has lapsed by September 20, AAFP asks you to pay the nonmember fee in place when you registered or reinstate. Payment is due in full at registration.
Registration includes all education and Main Stage sessions, the Xchange and exhibitor directory, networking events, session handouts and posters in the app, and 30 days of free FMX On Demand access.
Cancellation is in writing or by phone to the AAFP Member Resource Center, (800) 274-2237. Notice received by August 30, 2027 is refunded minus a $50 administrative fee. After that, cancellations and no-shows are not refunded. Refunds can take up to four weeks.
08 Housing
Hotels and housing for FMX 2027 in San Diego
Book through the FMX room block, which you reach inside the FMX 2027 registration flow on AAFP's registration site. AAFP says rooms booked directly with a hotel do not get the FMX discount.
AAFP's plan-your-trip page lists an August 24 cutoff for the hotel block.
If an unknown company calls or emails offering FMX rooms, ignore it and use the link on aafp.org. AAFP notes that onsite registration and hotel prices run higher, so registering and booking in one sitting before May 31 saves on both.
09 FMX On Demand
Missed FMX 2026? FMX On Demand still earns credit
The FMX 2026 schedule lives on as FMX On Demand: more than 100 recorded sessions. AAFP approved it for up to 143.00 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credits and designated a maximum of 143.00 AMA PRA Category 1 credits™. Approval and access both run to October 20, 2028.
Attendees got 30 free days and can upgrade their registration to keep access. Nonmembers and non-attendees buy it separately on aafp.org. A doctor short on credit before a December license renewal can work through it from home; see also our last-minute CME options.
