03 Guide

What a family medicine conference covers

Family medicine conferences are broad on purpose. One morning can move from diabetes and hypertension to rashes, sports injuries, contraception and depression, which matches a practice that sees every age. Some meetings add a procedures track for joint injections, skin biopsies or point-of-care ultrasound.

A family medicine board review CME course is organized around the certification exam rather than common office problems. Pick by what comes next for you: an exam, a license renewal, or a new procedure you want to offer in clinic.

04 Guide

AAFP Prescribed credit, AMA credit and ABFM

Family physicians often track three counts. State boards usually name AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. AAFP members must report 150 credits in each three-year reelection cycle, and at least 75 of them must be AAFP Prescribed credit. The AAFP Credit System reviews each activity and awards Prescribed or Elective credit, and many family medicine meetings carry both AAFP and AMA designations.

The American Board of Family Medicine sets its own continuing certification rules. NPs should look for contact hours with a pharmacology subtotal. PAs can log AAFP or AMA credit with NCCPA, which treats both as Category 1.

05 Guide

Free, virtual and in-person family medicine CME

Free CME for family medicine is easy to find through journals, health systems and the AAFP. Virtual CME in family medicine works for guideline updates as long as it carries the credit your board or the AAFP accepts. It costs less and fits around clinic hours, but it rarely includes procedure practice.

An in-person meeting earns its cost when you want hands-on stations or a structured board review. Teaching also counts: the AAFP allows up to 60 Prescribed credits for teaching in a reelection cycle, which helps if you precept residents or students.
