03 Guide

National society meetings vs regional cardiology courses

The biggest cardiology conferences are built around late-breaking trial results. Expect parallel rooms, a large exhibit hall and subspecialty tracks in imaging, electrophysiology and heart failure. Mark your sessions before you fly in, because you claim credit only for the hours you actually sat in.

Regional and university courses are smaller and review-style, and much of the room is internists, hospitalists, NPs and PAs who co-manage cardiac patients. Interventional cardiology conferences are a group of their own, with live case transmissions and device workshops. Read the fine print on those workshops: some are accredited, others are industry sessions listed as non-CME.

04 Guide

Which credits a cardiology meeting awards

Physicians should find the AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ designation in the program. Cardiologists certified by ABIM earn MOC points only from activities the provider has registered for ABIM MOC. The provider reports your completion, so you never mail certificates to the board, and ACCME lets providers mark those sessions with an ABIM MOC badge.

NCCPA lists both AAPA and the AMA (through ACCME-accredited providers) as Category 1 sponsors, so cardiology CME for PAs can be a physician course and still count toward the 100 credits due every two years. Cardiology nurse practitioner conferences usually print a pharmacology subtotal. That number matters to NPs certified by AANPCB, who need 25 pharmacology hours within 100 contact hours every five years.

05 Guide

Free and online cardiology CME vs a trip to a meeting

Free cardiology CME is mostly short online modules from journals, health systems and societies, handy for topping up hours late in a license cycle. Cardiology CME online gives up hands-on echo time and the chance to question trialists at the microphone.

A trip costs registration, flights and clinic days. Several large meetings sell a virtual pass or keep recordings open for credit for a limited window after the event. Before you pick the cheaper option, find the last date for claiming credit and the hours the on-demand package carries, which can be lower than the live total.

06 Questions

Which is the next one?

ACC.28 Scientific Session — Apr 1–3, 2028, Chicago, IL.

What is a CME/CE conference?

A meeting whose sessions are accredited for continuing education — AMA PRA Category 1 Credit for physicians, ANCC contact hours for nurses, ACPE for pharmacy, RACE for veterinary teams — so the hours count toward license renewal and certification.

How do you earn CE credit at a conference?

Attend the accredited sessions, then complete the accredited provider's evaluation to claim credit; the provider issues the certificate you keep for license renewal and audits.
