03 Guide

Who goes to critical care conferences

Critical care conferences draw the whole ICU team: intensivists, critical care nurses, NPs, PAs, respiratory therapists and pharmacists. Sessions on ventilation, sepsis, sedation and ECMO sit next to tracks on staffing, family meetings and ICU quality. Some meetings are run by nursing organizations and lean toward bedside care and certification review, so a critical care nursing conference may suit a unit educator better than a physician-led congress.

Narrower meetings cover neurocritical care, pediatric and neonatal ICUs, trauma and cardiac ICUs. If you work in one of those units, the focused meeting gives you more relevant sessions per day.

04 Guide

Credit types across the ICU team

Intensivists train through internal medicine, anesthesiology, surgery, pediatrics or emergency medicine, so the board that matters depends on your primary certificate. The program should carry AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, and the MOC statement tells you which boards the provider registered the activity with. ICU nurses need contact hours from an ANCC-accredited provider or another approval their board accepts.

Critical care CME for physician assistants does not have to be PA-specific. NCCPA accepts Category 1 credit sponsored by AAPA, AAFP or the AMA through ACCME-accredited providers. NPs should look at the pharmacology subtotal, since sessions on vasopressors, sedation and antimicrobials often carry pharmacology hours.

05 Guide

Simulation workshops vs critical care CME online

Airway, ultrasound and ECMO workshops are the main reason to attend in person. They have limited seats, usually cost extra and sometimes carry their own credit statement separate from the lecture program.

Critical care CME online is better for literature reviews and guideline changes, and it fits around night shifts. A workable plan is one meeting with a simulation day plus online hours for the rest. Ask your unit manager whether certification review courses come from a separate education budget.
