Big state meetings vs smaller dental CE courses
General dentistry conferences in the US are often large state or regional dental meetings with lectures, hands-on workshops and a big exhibit hall. Dentists, hygienists, assistants and office staff attend together, and programs run tracks for each role. Smaller courses from study clubs, dental schools and specialty groups take one topic, such as implants, endodontics or sleep dentistry, and go deep.
Hands-on courses have few seats and separate fees, so book those first if you want clinical skills. Sessions on the exhibit floor may be product presentations without CE credit.

ADA CERP, AGD PACE and state board rules
Dental CE providers are recognized through ADA CERP, which the Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition runs, or approved through AGD PACE. Both approve organizations; PACE says it does not approve individual speakers or course content. State dental boards set the hours and often require topics such as infection control, CPR, opioid prescribing or jurisprudence.
Dentists with a DEA registration also had the one-time eight-hour MATE Act training. DEA lists the ADA, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and CCEPR-recognized organizations as qualifying sources, and seminars at society meetings count.

Bringing the team and planning cost
Many offices close for a day so the whole team can attend a state meeting. That pays off only when the program has hygienist and assistant tracks whose hours count toward their own state requirements. Compare team registration rates and check whether CPR or infection control courses are offered for staff.
Online dental CE suits lecture topics and required courses, though many boards limit self-study hours. Keep the in-person days for hands-on work and for comparing equipment on the exhibit floor.
