03 Guide

What hospital medicine conferences cover

Hospital medicine conferences stay on the wards: sepsis, heart failure admissions, perioperative consults, discharge planning and quality projects. The national meeting adds tracks for program leaders, academic hospitalists and pediatric hospital medicine. Regional hospitalist conferences are shorter and more clinical, often run by a university division.

Hospitalist procedures CME is a separate format. Paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture and central lines are taught on simulators with bedside ultrasound, in small groups. If your privileges committee wants documented procedure training, ask whether the course issues a faculty-signed skills record in addition to the CME certificate.

04 Guide

Credit for hospitalists, NPs and PAs

Most adult hospitalists are ABIM diplomates, so CME hospital medicine programs often register sessions for ABIM MOC. Points post only for registered activities, and a procedure workshop may be registered separately from the lecture program or not at all. Read the MOC line for each part you buy.

Pediatric hospitalists certified by the American Board of Pediatrics need Part 2 points instead. ABP-approved CME shows up in the ABP Portfolio within 30 days after the provider reports it. PAs can log a physician program's AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ with NCCPA. NPs should check that nursing contact hours are listed.

05 Guide

Fitting a conference into a block schedule

A seven-on, seven-off schedule makes conference travel easier than in most specialties, since a meeting can fall in an off week without using vacation. Compare dates with your block calendar before the next schedule is built, while swaps are still easy, and send the CME request well ahead.

Hospitalist CME online suits the off weeks too, and the national meeting usually sells recordings after the event. If your group gives a CME allowance, ask what it covers: registration only, or travel and procedure course fees as well.
