Society meeting, university update or board review
Internal medicine conferences come in three formats. The national society meeting spans every subspecialty plus practice management and policy. University update courses compress a year of journal articles into short talks over a few days. Internal medicine review CME follows the certification exam content, so it suits physicians facing a board exam or coming back after time away.
Hospitalists and office internists sign up for the same course title and want different things, so scan the session grid for ambulatory, inpatient or point-of-care ultrasound tracks. When sessions run in parallel, check whether the fee includes slide sets or recordings of the rooms you missed.

How ABIM MOC points get reported
State boards and hospitals mostly name AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for physicians. ABIM MOC is a separate count. A conference earns MOC points only when the accredited provider registers it, and ABIM recognizes three credit types: Medical Knowledge, Practice Assessment and Patient Safety.
Expect a post-test or evaluation. The points you receive can be lower than the maximum the activity offers if you skip parts of it. The provider reports completion through ACCME, and ABIM does not award points from certificates you send in. NPs and PAs in the same room should look for their own line in the credits table.

Online and free internal medicine CME vs a conference week
Internal medicine CME online is plentiful, and free internal medicine CME from journals and academic centers handles guideline changes well. Audio programs fit a commute. Steady online work across a license cycle avoids a year-end scramble, but many free modules are not registered for MOC, so a stack of certificates may still leave your ABIM count short.
A conference week packs a lot of credit into a few days if you attend all day. Society member rates and early registration deadlines change the price more than most people expect, so register before the first deadline passes.
