02 Guide
Bovine, equine, swine and small ruminant meetings
Large animal veterinary conferences are usually organized by species or production system. Bovine practitioner meetings cover dairy and beef herd health, reproduction, lameness and milk quality. Swine and small ruminant groups hold their own meetings. Equine conferences focus on lameness, imaging and reproduction for horse practices, and mixed-practice meetings run large and small animal tracks side by side.
A dairy practitioner gets more from herd-health sessions than from a general veterinary meeting. Wet labs and farm visits have limited places, and the registration page often lists lab fees and clothing or biosecurity requirements.
03 Guide
RACE-approved CE and the DEA exemption
Most US veterinary CE is approved through RACE, the AAVSB's Registry of Approved Continuing Education. RACE programs and providers are searchable through CE Broker, and AAVSB's RACEtrack records your hours. Each state veterinary board sets renewal hours and may limit online hours.
Some meetings get separate RACE approval for technician sessions, so check before counting them. Veterinarians are exempt from DEA's one-time eight-hour substance use disorder training, which covers all DEA registrants except practitioners who are solely veterinarians.
04 Guide
Scheduling around seasons and distance
Large animal work follows calving, breeding and show seasons. Check meeting dates against your busy months before committing, and arrange emergency call coverage early. Rural practitioners often drive far, so a regional meeting can save a day each way.
Online veterinary CE handles regulatory updates, pharmacology and practice management. It cannot replace palpation, ultrasound or surgery labs. When choosing between a species meeting and a general conference, compare RACE hours, lab access and the full cost, including lost practice days.
