TopicHoursHow often
Controlled substances prescribingNPs who prescribe controlled substances: at least 1 CE hour within the preceding 12 months (prescribing practices, chronic pain, recognizing abuse/misuse, or non-opioid alternatives)1every year

Alternatives & exemptions. An NP with current national certification by a national credentialing body is deemed in compliance with the 50-hour requirement (the controlled substance hour still applies). Completing the federal MATE Act training counts for the controlled substance requirement for that 2-year CE period.

Good to know. NPs are approved to practice by the Board of Nursing and the Medical Board jointly; the rule applies to NP approval, separately from the RN license.
