03 Guide

Research congresses vs clinical oncology updates

The top oncology conferences are research congresses where practice-changing trial results are released. They are huge, run many sessions at once and draw a heavy industry presence. Hematology has its own annual meeting, and there are disease-specific meetings for breast, lung, gastrointestinal and genitourinary cancers.

A community oncology conference focuses on practice operations, payer rules and treatment outside academic centers. Post-congress update courses condense the year's practice changes into a day or two and suit community oncologists, hospitalists and primary care clinicians who follow cancer survivors.

04 Guide

Credit for oncologists, oncology nurses and pharmacists

Medical oncology and hematology are ABIM subspecialties, so medical oncology conferences often register sessions for ABIM MOC. Radiation oncologists answer to a different board and should read its rules. Every physician program should carry AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Large congresses usually run separate nursing and pharmacy programs. Oncology pharmacists can check the topic code inside each universal activity number; ACPE uses 01 for disease state and drug therapy content. Oncology nurses look for ANCC-accredited contact hours and often for review sessions aimed at specialty certification.

05 Guide

Free oncology CME, industry funding and congress season

Oncology CME online is extensive, and free oncology CME is common through journals and education companies, often paid for by commercial grants. ACCME's Standards for Integrity and Independence require accredited CME to be independent of commercial influence and require disclosure of faculty financial relationships, so read the disclosure slide.

Big congresses fill nearby hotels early; book housing when registration opens. If you cannot travel, a virtual pass or a post-congress highlights course with credit may cover the data you need.
