About American Academy of Family Physicians
Continuing education has been written into AAFP's rules from the start. Founded in 1947 as the American Academy of General Practice, it took its current name in 1971 and still requires active members to complete 150 hours of CME every three years. Headquarters are in Leawood, Kansas.
Its main event is the Family Medicine Experience, or FMX, which AAFP calls its largest event for CME and connection. Sessions are chosen around your own practice, be it rural medicine or direct primary care, and residents attend alongside physicians decades into their careers. The Academy's Congress of Delegates meets just before it.
FMX is reviewed for AAFP credit, and AAFP is ACCME-accredited, so physicians can also look for AMA credit in the statement published each year. AOA members should note that AAFP credit is recognized as equivalent to AOA Category 2. Nonmembers can register, and care team members self-report sessions for their own licensing bodies.
