About American Academy of Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologists know the Academy as their main membership body, with a stated global community of 32,000 medical doctors. Its roots go back to the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology of 1896, which trained eye, ear, nose and throat doctors; the two specialties split and the AAO incorporated separately in 1979.
Its annual meeting is large and layered. Subspecialty Day comes with separate credit, and the main program includes instruction courses, Skills Transfer labs and original papers. It is worth reading the CME rules, since posters, videos and expo-hall talks don't count, and exhibitor or guest registrations aren't eligible for credit.
Technicians and practice administrators have their own affiliated academies, AAOP and AAOE, which gives a whole practice team a reason to look at the same meeting, though credit rules differ by program.
