02 About
About American Academy of Periodontology
This is the specialty society for periodontists, who treat diseases of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth and place dental implants. The Academy states a membership of 7,500 and a dual purpose: advancing the periodontal and general health of the public and promoting excellence in the practice.
Its annual meeting is the main in-person draw, combining hands-on skills, current research and talk about where the profession is heading. A dental hygiene program runs alongside the main sessions, so a practice can send more than one person. Between meetings, members have an e-learning center and webinars, and recordings of past meetings are sold afterward.
AAP is an ADA CERP recognized provider. That recognition does not guarantee that a given state dental board will accept the hours, as AAP's own notice points out, so check with your board. The Academy also warns about putting new procedures into practice on limited training, which is fair advice for anyone returning from a hands-on course.
