02 About
About American Psychiatric Nurses Association
Founded in 1986, APNA opens its membership to psychiatric-mental health nurses at every level: associate and baccalaureate RNs, psychiatric nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and PhD and DNP scientists and academics. APNA says no other PMH nursing organization includes all of them, and its programming spans practice, education, leadership and research.
The annual conference is what most members know, billed by APNA as the largest gathering of PMH nurses in the country. Attendance can be in person or virtual, and credit does not stop when the live event does, because contact hours can also be earned from recordings afterward. APNA is accredited by ANCC's Commission on Accreditation as an NCPD provider, so the hours are ANCC contact hours.
Its Clinical Psychopharmacology Institute is the narrower choice, aimed at nurses who want concentrated medication-focused education. For an APRN working on pharmacology hours, that may be the better fit of the two.
