02 About
About American Thoracic Society
Tuberculosis was the original concern. The society started in 1905 as the American Sanatorium Association, took its present name in 1960 and became independent of the American Lung Association in 2000. Today its more than 22,000 members cover pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, and it also writes clinical practice guidelines.
The International Conference is where the research and the clinic meet, so expect abstracts and scientific discovery alongside clinical updates. It suits physicians, researchers and also nurses, respiratory therapists and hospitalists, and the society says 40 percent of attendees come from outside the United States. Its 14 assemblies help plan the program, which makes it heavier on science than a review course.
Physicians can earn CME, and ATS is accredited by the ACCME. Some ATS activities also carry Maintenance of Certification credit with ABIM and ABP, which is worth checking if you hold those certificates.
