02 Guide
Orthopedic surgery meetings vs clinical courses
Orthopedic conferences for surgeons range from the national academy meeting to subspecialty meetings in sports medicine, spine, hand, foot and ankle, trauma, arthroplasty and pediatrics. Many include cadaver or sawbones labs with limited seats and extra fees. Surgeons usually choose by subspecialty and by which techniques are taught hands-on.
Orthopedic CME courses for primary care, urgent care and sports medicine clinicians cover the shoulder, knee, back and fractures managed without surgery, plus injections and x-ray reading. If you do not operate, these give more usable skills than a surgical meeting.
03 Guide
ABOS, PAs and NPs: which credit counts
Surgeons and other physicians need AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery accepts accredited CME toward its Maintenance of Certification, but self-assessment credit must be pre-approved by ABOS, so look for that wording if you need it. Industry-run skills sessions often carry no CME.
Orthopedic CME for physician assistants can be AAPA or AMA Category 1, since NCCPA accepts both toward 100 credits every two years. Orthopedic CME for nurse practitioners should list contact hours and any pharmacology hours, which usually come from injection and analgesic sessions.
04 Guide
Using an orthopedic conference calendar
An orthopedic conference calendar helps you plan around clinic and OR blocks. Society meetings are usually annual, while many hands-on courses repeat several times a year, so a missed course often has a later date. Cadaver labs sell out first.
Orthopedic CME online, including free orthopedic CME from journals and academic departments, covers imaging review and evidence updates. It cannot teach casting or injection technique. Ask your employer whether lab fees are covered or only the base registration.
