03 Guide

Interventional, clinical and team pain meetings

Pain medicine and pain management conferences split into two broad types. Interventional meetings teach epidural injections, radiofrequency ablation, nerve blocks and neuromodulation, often with cadaver or fluoroscopy labs. A clinical pain management conference covers chronic pain, opioid stewardship, non-drug therapies and the behavioral side of pain, and draws primary care clinicians, NPs, PAs, pharmacists and psychologists.

A primary care clinician managing chronic pain gets more from the clinical meeting. Anesthesiologists and physiatrists building an interventional practice need labs with few learners per instructor.

04 Guide

Pain management CME and the DEA MATE Act training

Starting June 27, 2023, DEA required practitioners to affirm on their next registration form that they completed a one-time eight hours of training on treating opioid and other substance use disorders. Practitioners who are solely veterinarians are exempt. The hours can be cumulative, can include training taken before December 29, 2022, and can come from seminars at professional society meetings or virtual sessions.

Qualifying sources include ACCME-accredited providers, the AMA, AANP, AAPA, ANCC, the ADA and ASAM. States add their own pain management or controlled-substance CME rules, which differ by profession, so ask for a certificate that states the opioid and substance use hours.

05 Guide

Online pain management CME and choosing a course

Online CME pain management courses are a quick way to meet a state opioid requirement, and free pain management CME is common. Check that the certificate lists the credit type and the topic hours your board wants.

In-person pain conferences make sense for procedure skills or for team training with behavioral health and pharmacy colleagues. Pharmacists on the team can spot qualifying sessions by the 08 topic code in the universal activity number, which ACPE uses for opioids, pain management and substance use disorder.
