03 Guide
Types of pediatric conferences
Pediatric conferences include the national pediatrics meeting, subspecialty meetings in emergency, hospital, critical care and developmental pediatrics, and update courses for general pediatricians. Many update courses are held in family-friendly destinations, which helps if you travel with your own children.
Pediatric nursing and pediatric NP conferences form a separate group, with tracks on well-child care, behavioral health and school-age problems. A clinic pediatrician, a hospitalist and a subspecialist will rank the same pediatric conferences very differently, so start from your work setting.
04 Guide
ABP Maintenance of Certification and CME
Pediatricians need AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for most state licenses. Certification with the American Board of Pediatrics is a separate track: 100 points every five years, at least 50 from Lifelong Learning (Part 2) and at least 50 from Health Care Improvement (Part 4).
Accredited CME counts toward Part 2 only when it has been approved for ABP MOC credit, and you can search those activities in ACCME's CME Passport. After you finish, the provider reports your completion and the points appear in your ABP Portfolio within 30 days. Pediatric NPs and nurses should look for contact hours and a pharmacology subtotal.
05 Guide
Pediatric CME online vs an in-person meeting
Free pediatric CME and other pediatric CME online cover vaccine schedules, guideline changes and common office problems, and children's hospitals publish much of it. It is an inexpensive way to add hours; check that each module issues a certificate.
In-person meetings earn their cost through hands-on skills such as neonatal resuscitation, procedural sedation or splinting, and through the number of credits packed into a few days. Before booking, see whether the organizer lists childcare and whether your state requires a topic such as child abuse recognition.
