Types of psychiatry conferences
Psychiatry conferences include the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting, subspecialty meetings in child and adolescent, geriatric, addiction and consultation-liaison psychiatry, and psychopharmacology update courses. Psychopharmacology updates draw psychiatric NPs and primary care clinicians who prescribe for depression, anxiety and ADHD.
Psychiatry for primary care CME teaches screening, first-line treatment and referral thresholds. A psychiatrist usually chooses by subspecialty. A prescriber outside psychiatry tends to get more from a practical update course than from the national meeting.

Credit for psychiatrists and the mental health team
Psychiatrists need AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Those certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology also have ABPN Continuing Certification requirements, which are separate from state license CME. Many psychiatry meetings add credit for psychologists (APA-approved sponsors of the American Psychological Association), social workers (ASWB ACE) and counselors (NBCC).
Each approval may cover different sessions, so read the psychiatry CME/CE credits table line by line. The American Psychiatric Association is also on DEA's list of groups whose substance use disorder training counts toward the one-time eight-hour requirement.

Online psychiatry CME and state topics
Psychiatry CME online is widely available, and free psychiatry CME covers new drug approvals and guideline changes. Geriatric psychiatry CME and addiction modules are easy to find on demand.
In-person meetings are better for psychotherapy workshops, case conferences and time with colleagues in your subspecialty. Many states require topics such as suicide prevention or controlled-substance prescribing for renewal; match sessions to your board's list and keep certificates that name the topic.
