02 Guide
Lung disease, critical care and sleep under one roof
Pulmonology and pulmonary conferences often cover lung disease, critical care and sleep medicine together, because many pulmonologists also work in the ICU or sleep lab. The large thoracic society meeting spans research and clinical work in all three. A regional pulmonary critical care conference is usually shorter and case-based.
Single-disease meetings exist for pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, COPD and cystic fibrosis, and they attract the people who run those clinics. Interventional pulmonology has its own courses for bronchoscopy, EBUS and pleural procedures on simulators. Respiratory therapists and pulmonary nurses attend many of these meetings, so look for a track that fits your role.
03 Guide
Pulmonary CME and ABIM MOC
Pulmonary disease and critical care medicine are ABIM subspecialties, so the MOC rules match internal medicine. A session counts for MOC only if the provider registered it, and the program says so. Many pulmonary CME programs carry ACCME's ABIM MOC badge on registered sessions. If you hold two ABIM certificates, check your ABIM account to see what you still owe.
Respiratory therapists need credit approved for their own profession, and many physician-focused programs do not offer it. Ask the organizer before you register.
04 Guide
Online pulmonary CME course or a hands-on meeting
An online pulmonary CME course works for guideline updates on COPD, asthma and lung cancer screening. Many are short and inexpensive, and some are free. Bronchoscopy and CT review need small-group teaching, so a recorded lecture will not replace a simulator day.
When you choose between the national thoracic meeting and a regional one, think about walking as well as content. The big meeting spreads sessions across a convention center, while a regional meeting keeps everything in a few rooms. Book bronchoscopy and ultrasound workshops first, since those seats go fast.
