04 Guide

What credit a CME conference should list

At CME conferences for physicians, the accreditation statement should list AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Only a provider accredited by the ACCME or by a recognized state medical society may certify an activity for it, and the activity has to meet the AMA's rules as well as the accreditor's. The statement names the provider and the maximum credit. You claim only the sessions you attended.

Category 2 credit is the kind you claim yourself, for learning such as reading medical literature or consulting peers. Accredited providers may not certify or advertise an activity for Category 2, so a brochure that promises it is a warning sign. Keep your own log with dates and topics.

05 Guide

Broad update courses or a specialty society meeting

Primary care CME conferences pack short updates on diabetes, hypertension, skin, women's health and office procedures into one program. Family medicine and internal medicine physicians use them to cover many renewal topics in a single trip.

A specialty society meeting goes deeper into one field and suits physicians whose board asks for specialty content. MOC points are a separate layer that the provider has to add through the ACCME's CME for MOC program, so Category 1 credit alone does not mean MOC. Before you pay, open the session grid and count the talks you would actually attend. Ultrasound and joint injection workshops usually cost extra.

06 Guide

Live, virtual and destination meetings

Live CME conferences give you hands-on stations and hallway time with faculty. Virtual and online CME conferences save travel days. Hybrid meetings sometimes certify the live stream and the on-demand library as two separate activities, so check which one your fee buys.

Las Vegas CME conferences and other destination meetings bundle hotel, flights and program into one booking. Before you charge that to a CME allowance, read your employer's policy on travel days and family costs. If you present, the AMA lets faculty claim up to four Category 1 credits per hour of an original presentation at a live certified activity held on or after January 1, 2023.

07 Guide

DEA training, state topics and meetings abroad

Every DEA registration form, new or renewal, has carried a training attestation since June 27, 2023: you confirm one completed course of eight hours on opioid and other substance use disorders. Conference programs sometimes print a symbol next to qualifying sessions.

State medical boards add their own required topics by state and cycle. Book those sessions first and build the clinical days around them. Our state requirement pages link to each board's rule. A meeting outside the US can still give Category 1 credit if it is in the AMA's International Conference Recognition Program or covered by a conversion agreement, such as the one with UEMS.
