03 Guide

Large assemblies, resort courses and skills labs

EM conferences range from the large specialty assemblies to small courses in ski and beach towns. The assemblies cover research, ED operations and policy beside clinical tracks. Resort courses keep talks short and clinical and usually finish by early afternoon. Pediatric emergency medicine conferences form their own group, as do ultrasound and airway courses.

Skills labs for airway, ultrasound and resuscitation need small groups, so check the seats per lab and the extra fee. Lecture-only meetings are easier to fit around shifts. Decide first what you need most: new evidence, procedure practice or a lot of hours fast. That choice narrows the list of the best emergency medicine conferences quickly.

04 Guide

CME requirements in emergency medicine

Three bodies usually set the rules: your state medical board, the hospital credentialing office and, if you are certified, the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Each counts differently, so keep certificates that name the credit type. Most boards and hospitals name AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

EDs prescribe opioids every shift, so the DEA training rule reached most EM physicians: a one-time eight hours on opioid and other substance use disorders, affirmed on the DEA registration form. DEA accepts hours from seminars at professional society meetings and virtual sessions, added up across several events, from ACCME-accredited and other listed providers.

05 Guide

Free and online emergency medicine CME vs a conference week

Free emergency medicine CME is everywhere: podcasts, blogs and journal modules. Much of it carries no credit at all, so look for a certificate that names the credit type before you count the hours. Emergency medicine CME online suits shift workers who learn in short blocks.

A conference week costs more but gets you simulation, procedure practice and time with other emergency clinicians. Many groups give a yearly CME allowance; ask whether it covers travel and whether unused money rolls over. PAs, NPs and ED nurses should find their own credit line on the brochure.
