04 Guide

Contact hours, pharmacology hours and CME for NPs

Nurse practitioner conferences usually award nursing contact hours from ANCC-accredited providers, and many NP CME conferences also certify AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Whether physician CME counts toward your renewal is up to your certifying body and your state board of nursing. Check both before you count it.

If you certify with AANPCB (now branded NPCB) and renew by practice hours and CE, you need 1,000 NP practice hours and 100 contact hours of advanced CE inside the five-year period. Twenty-five of those hours must be advanced practice pharmacology. Precepting can replace up to 25 non-pharmacology hours, at most 125 preceptor hours. On each meeting's credit statement, compare the pharmacology line first.

05 Guide

National meetings or a population-focus conference

National nurse practitioner conferences run parallel tracks for every population focus. Family nurse practitioner conferences lean on primary care: chronic disease, dermatology, women's health. Pediatric and psychiatric NP meetings go deeper into one population, which pays off when your practice and your certification both sit there.

Pick the meeting whose program fills your gaps. Count the pharmacology sessions you would really sit through. Suturing, joint injection and dermatology procedure workshops tend to have seat caps and extra fees. Faculty who practice as NPs tend to frame prescribing questions the way your own scope of practice does.

06 Guide

License, DEA registration and budget

State license renewal and national certification run on separate clocks, so put both expiry dates in your calendar. NPs who prescribe controlled substances must have completed the DEA's one-time, eight-hour training on substance use disorders before they register or renew. Ask the organizer which sessions, if any, it documents toward that requirement.

Early-bird and member rates can differ a lot, so price both. Ask whether employer CE money covers flights and hotel or registration alone. File every certificate with the session agenda. In an audit, the agenda is what proves a session was pharmacology.
