Contact hours that count for license and certification
Nursing conferences award contact hours. ANCC accredits organizations that provide nursing continuing professional development, and its Find an Accredited Organization search lets you check a provider. If a conference page only says "CEUs" and names no accredited provider, ask before you pay.
Your state board of nursing sets the renewal hours, and the numbers vary widely by state. Specialty certification runs on its own clock. ANCC certification renews every five years with activities completed inside that period, and you can apply up to a year before it expires. ANCC has published a 2027 renewal handbook for applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027, so check which version covers you.

Specialty, leadership and nursing education conferences
Oncology nursing conferences and pediatric nursing conferences follow certification content closely. Nursing leadership conferences are built for charge nurses, managers and directors who deal with staffing models, budgets and quality data. Nursing education conferences serve educators and professional development staff who run training for others.
Lay the session grid next to your certification exam outline. The contact hours on the brochure are a maximum, and you earn only the sessions you attend and evaluate. Pre-conference workshops often need their own registration and can hold a large share of the hours.

Virtual, local and destination nursing conferences
Virtual nursing conferences fit around shifts. Recordings often stay up for weeks, but on-demand viewing may be certified as a separate activity with its own contact hours. Read the credit statement for the live part and the recorded part.
Nursing conferences in Hawaii and other resort meetings often run half-day programs, so you get fewer hours per travel day. If your hospital reimburses tuition, read its rules on airfare and hotel first. For a board audit, the certificate has to show the provider and the contact hours; a registration receipt is not enough.
