03 Guide

How NCCPA certification maintenance shapes your CME

For physician assistant conferences, the planning starts with NCCPA. Certification runs on a 10-year process made of five two-year cycles. In each cycle you earn and log 100 CME credits and pay the maintenance fee by 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on December 31 of your expiration year. You also pass PANRE or PANRE-LA within the 10 years.

At least 50 of the 100 credits must be Category 1. NCCPA accepts AAPA Category 1 CME and AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from ACCME-accredited providers or recognized state medical societies. Self-assessment Category 1 activities earn 50% extra credit, and the first 20 PI-CME credits per cycle count double. NCCPA randomly audits Category 1 entries, so keep every certificate.

04 Guide

PA conferences or physician specialty meetings

Physician assistant CME conferences built for PAs mix clinical updates with scope, supervision and billing. Faculty are often PAs, so the cases look like a PA's clinic day. Specialty society meetings run by physician organizations go deeper into one field and usually certify AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, which NCCPA counts as Category 1.

Let your CME log decide. If you need volume across topics, a broad PA conference covers more ground in fewer days. In dermatology, orthopedics or emergency medicine, the specialty meeting may teach more per hour. Hands-on workshops often carry a separate fee.

05 Guide

Free CME, state licenses and the DEA training

Free CME for physician assistants from online providers can cover single topics. A conference earns its cost when you need many Category 1 credits at once, hands-on skills or time with colleagues. Ask whether session recordings come with registration, since on-demand hours need no second trip.

Your state license has its own CME rules and cycle. NCCPA says its audit policy is not the state medical board's, so expect your board to check on its own terms. A DEA registration brings one more item: proof at renewal that you finished the federal eight-hour substance use disorder training once.
