School nurse and school health conferences
School health conferences bring school nurses together with health aides, counselors, social workers and administrators. Topics include asthma, diabetes and seizure plans, emergency response, medication administration, immunization rules, screenings and student mental health.
State school nurse association meetings are usually the most useful, because delegation, medication and immunization rules differ by state. A national school nurse conference adds policy and leadership content. A school behavioral health conference suits nurses who work with counselors and psychologists on student mental health plans.

Contact hours and NCSN recertification
For RN license renewal, school nurses need contact hours their state nursing board accepts; ANCC accreditation is a common approval. Some states also certify school nurses through the education department with separate renewal hours, so check both.
The National Board for Certification of School Nurses awards the NCSN credential, which renews every five years. NBCSN asks that each CE certificate name the approved accreditation or certification body, and you also document your current RN license and school nursing work hours. Upload certificates as you earn them rather than at the end of the cycle.

School nurse CEUs online and planning attendance
School nurse CEUs online, including free ones from health departments and nursing associations, are a practical way to add hours during the school year. Confirm the approval body on each certificate.
Most school nurses can travel only during breaks or district in-service days. Ask your district early whether it pays registration and a substitute, because budgets follow the school year. A coordinated school health conference may also count toward district professional development hours, so ask your administrator.
