04 Guide
NBCC certification and your state license
Before you register for counseling conferences, know which two sets of rules apply to you. The state counseling board sets the hours, the cycle and the required topics for your license. If you also hold the NCC from the National Board for Certified Counselors, its recertification has separate CE rules and a separate timeline.
For the NCC, conference courses have no clock-hour limit, and NBCC ACEP approval is not required as long as the course meets NBCC guidelines and fits an approved content area. Your documentation must show your name, the date, hours, program title and the presenter's or provider's signature. State boards decide on approved providers themselves, so check both.
05 Guide
Mental health, school and specialty counseling meetings
Mental health counseling conferences cover assessment, treatment approaches, trauma, addiction and supervision. School counselor conferences focus on school settings and may carry credit toward an education credential instead of a counseling license.
Choose by the credential you are renewing. If you hold a school credential and a clinical license, check which one each session counts toward. Ethics sessions tend to be few and fill early, so register for them before anything else.
06 Guide
Near you, online and cost
Counseling conferences near you, such as state association meetings, are often the cheapest way to earn several hours in one weekend, and they are more likely to cover your state's laws. National counselor conferences offer more tracks but add travel and days away from clients.
Streaming a meeting saves the hotel bill. Check whether your board limits distance or home-study hours and whether it treats a live webinar as live. NBCC has a verification form for activities that issue no certificate, but a conference certificate is simpler, so collect it before you leave.
